So I’ve started a magazine. Or more accurately, I’ve co-founded a magazine called The Social Man with Niels Hoven, my extraordinary friend and old college roommate. It’s a big project, that I’ll write more on later, but we believe in our idea so it’s going to happen (thanks to Niels, who for some reason, is too silly to back down from seemingly insurmountable challenges).
Right now, I’m writing the business plan, which has been owning me for the last 4 days. In fact, other than running, I haven’t left the house since Sunday night. I’m learning an incredible amount, about magazines, and mostly about how to manage my projects. Monday was a bad day. I flexed my muscles against the empty pages of the business plan, and it didn’t move. Tuesday, I saw the light for a while, and it progressed nicely. Then I hit the financial projections section, and yesterday, it didn’t move again.
How do you write a financial projection section? How does that work? Where do you get the estimated numbers and percentages from? I’m trying to focus on my strengths, which I believe is connecting with people, and in this case, asking for advice, but yesterday was tough. Today we talked to Will Pearson, who co-founded Mental_Floss Magazine, and I’m coming back with renewed strength.
It all comes down to breaking things down into manageable, actionable pieces. I’ve heard it a thousand times, but it’s still hard. Focus on the next step to your goal. Not just the goal itself. So simple. So true. So crucial.
